Weekend Robot Development II

Monday, December 28, 2009

While not fully tested, as the market isn't open for trading, I have also completed both the meta-robot concept and a notification system. The meta-robot will look at the trades made via the current profitable robot and impose rules that require trades to open at a better price. The required difference, in pips, will be divided in two and added to the meta-robot's take profit point. For example, if the existing robot makes 6 pips on a position then the new meta-robot may open two pips lower and require a take profit of 7 pips. The combination of a lower entry point and a lower take profit point imply that the meta-robot will always get a better deal. It will also have a higher chance of getting out of it's positions faster. Heh, nothing wrong with making pips faster! Of course, this also implies that the meta-robot may have less ability to open positions as better priced positions may not always be available. There is a bit more complexity to it but I won't bore you with the details.Anyway, as usual, real life trading will tell the real story. Finally, the notification system is implemented as a request to a web site. The web site will be able to look at the request parameters and decide what to do. For now, the web site does nothing interesting. Once I've seen the system in action for a while, and I decide it's working well and that it's useful, I'll see about putting more effort into a delivery system.

Forex Robot Mania

As suggested in my last post...
As a side note, I'm planning to make opposing robots this weekend. They will trade long and short positions in different sub-accounts.I've put together yet another robot. It will trade the same currency both long and short in separate sub-accounts. I'll have to wait until Monday or Tuesday to activate it.A few points I feel are worth mentioning:
I've been developing software and systems for my entire career -- I don't expect everyone can just snap together trading robots.
There are rate limitations, position size limitations and margin use limitations built into a common framework used by all the robots I'm putting together.Anyway, each robot I make has customizations in several areas. Basically these all involve trade entry and exit conditions -- which can range from very simple to very complex. Here is a chunk of common code used in each of my robots. Basically, I call the set of information relating a sub-account and a currency pair a trading context. Here is part of a function that gathers this context:// ***************************************************// Given strings representing the account to trade and// the pair to be traded generate a trading context.// ***************************************************function getTradingContext(useacct, usepair){ // Determine account ID from it's name // ----------------------------------- var acctid = 0; for (id in accounts) { if ( accounts[id].name == useacct ) acctid = id; } if ( acctid == 0 ) { write("Account name '" + useacct + "' not found!"); return null; } // Capture sub-account details in the trading context // -------------------------------------------------- var myContext = accounts[acctid];Once we have the account details we can determine various trading limitations. Here I use the account balance as well as manually controlled "reserve" and "release" values that determine default lot size and margin limit values: // Calculate various balance values for various purposes // ----------------------------------------------------- reserve = 0.00; release = 0.00; bal = myContext.balance; // Avoid silly mistakes // -------------------- if ( release > reserve ) release = reserve; lsbal = bal - reserve; // lot balance trbal = bal - reserve + release; // margin balance ls = (lsbal/20) / 100000; // lots size ml = trbal * 0.099; // margin limit myContext.reserve = reserve; myContext.release = release; myContext.lsbal = lsbal; myContext.lotsize = ls.toFixed(5); myContext.trbal = trbal; myContext.marginlimit = trbal * 0.095;Before a trade can be made the current account margin usage will be compared to the margin limit determined above. When a trade is made the default size of the trade is the lot size determined above. Some other items loaded into the context are shown here: // Capture currency pair details // ------------------------------- myContext.usepair = usepair; myContext.pair = pairs[usepair]; myContext.pipsize = pairs[usepair].pip; myContext.spread = pairs[usepair].ask-pairs[usepair].bid; // Set a spread limit for various currencies // ----------------------------------------- myContext.spreadlimit = (4.26 * myContext.pipsize); if ( usepair == "CHFJPY" ) myContext.spreadlimit = (2.26 * myContext.pipsize); if ( usepair == "USDJPY" ) myContext.spreadlimit = (2.26 * myContext.pipsize); if ( usepair == "EURUSD" ) myContext.spreadlimit = (2.01 * myContext.pipsize);Including the currency pair information, especially the spread, is significant. For example, I do not let my robots trade when the spread is above certain values. This is because higher spreads are generally present when significant news events occur.Later in my robots, in a function that is called when price changes are detected, I'll have something like the following: longctx = getTradingContext("sub1",currentPair); if ( longctx ) tradeLong(longctx); shortctx = getTradingContext("sub2",currentPair); if ( shortctx ) tradeShort(shortctx);Generally, I'll use short term charts and limit robot operations to the opening of a new candle. This avoids needless processing but how you activate your trading functions is up to you. Notice how I can simply pass the context, as developed above, into a trading function? The trading functions have the job of deciding whether or not to open a position in a sub-account that it controls. It may or may not use all the details available to it.There you go. While this isn't complete it is by far the majority of a basic robot framework. If you are a programmer you simply have to figure out the trading rules to apply and write one or more functions that embodies those rules. For example, you may want to apply indicators to a chart, examine previously opened orders, or even trigger an email signal.Hey, as a bonus for reading this far, here is a function that examines current open orders to see how many fall within a price range. Basically, I use this function to make sure that my robots aren't able to accumulate positions around any particular price point. Notice that one of the parameters is the trading context developed above.// ***************************************************// How many orders are open between min an max prices?// ***************************************************function rangeOrderQty(ctx, min, max){ var qty=0; for (ticket in activeOrders) { if ( activeOrders[ticket].accountId != ctx.id ) continue; if ( activeOrders[ticket].pair != ctx.usepair ) continue; if ( activeOrders[ticket].price >= min && activeOrders[ticket].price <= max ) qty++; } return qty;}Finally, the previous code is for the FxSpyder trading platform. This is what I'm using to write robots these days. I continue to trade via Oanada.

US Economy Heads Up !!

If you are wondering what is going on with the US economy, this puzzle piece from CNBC will fit in very nicely.
Dunkelberg: You Can't See Main Street From Wall StreetWhat this is saying is that there probably is not a small business collapse in the works due to credit issues. Smaller businesses will simply wait until they see consumer spending before they bother to access credit.Personally, I am going to suggest that old habits die hard. For all those that did not suffer unemployment, which will be the majority of consumers, the lure of credit and consumption will be waiting for them once confidence returns. As well, they will have fattened their bank accounts to the point that they won't know how to resist putting some of it to use. While we do perhaps have a lot of reasons to fear gloom and doom, we also have a consumer tinderbox waiting for a spark. I don't know which one will win out nor do I know how long it will do so. For example, I don't know if the tinderbox can be lit before housing prices start to rise. What is the ratio of renters vs owners? I do know that the nuggets of information regarding real people, real habits, and their likely actions are few and far between. Too much of the material we read (on CNBC) is very biased by political viewpoints... and you need to find a way to see past that barrier to the good information the partisan baloney conceals.UPDATE: Wednesday 7-Oct-2009As a counterpoint, here is another article talking about problems caused by the ongoing lack of various debt-securitization markets.
Why It's Still Difficult for Many Americans to Borrow MoneyHowever, I will point out that the title seems a bit broad for the issue at hand. It seems that the article is pointing to the idea of a systemic inability for large lenders to resell their lending in order to enable more lending.Perhaps the fact that these institutions, and their rating agency cohorts, have just burned half the planet with their prior recklessness is one reason that purchasers of these products are a bit gun shy?

Buy AUDJPY (On Dips)???????????????

It's very plausible that the RBA (Reserve Bank of Australia) has started the slow process of moving interest rates from emergency levels to normal.
RBA Starts Rate RisesWe'll want to see what happens over the next couple of months in order to confirm this analysis. However, from now on whenever the markets are panicked about the latest downward surprise, it might be time to dip your toes in.We're staring at the bottom of a long term AUDJPY carry trade cycle. I know that Japan has made some noise about not wanting a weak dollar -- but you have to look at the size of their debt load before you start to worry about them being willing or able to withstand high interest rates. The recently touted alternate carry trade, consisting of the AUDUSD, is much more precarious in my opinion. It's great in the short term. However, in the longer term, perhaps a year or more, I think you'll find the greenback starts to get supported by higher interest rates. How else will the USA entice foreign entities to continue to buy and hold debt once the worldwide spate of risk aversion fades?Personally, I think this is a good time to raise capital and slowly work on getting carry trades protected by an in-profit stop loss. Presumably, over the course of months and years, we should find that 80.00 represents resistance, then perhaps 85.00, 90.00, 95.00 or more. We'll probably have Yen intervention from time to time as well and language designed to scare us out... but if you keep an eye on the fundamentals you can probably view these as opportunities to place more capital into stop loss protected profitable trades. Also, if I was managing a countries financial reserves I think I'd be looking for currency trading opportunities involving countries that are both economically sound and likely to continue to raise interest rates over the years as inflation gathers steam. The general business cycle is probably not going to disappear this time around either... regardless of all the hyperbole in the mainstream media............................................................................

Recent Forex Results

It's very rewarding to make an observation and then have results conform to your expectations.Anyway, I'm still letting my robot do my trading for me. It's earning north of 1% per day and I continue to make minor tweaks in an attempt to push the appreciation rate closer to 2% if I can.Recent tweaks involve looking at various stochastic values in order to adjust position entry scale to some degree. Obviously, as the robot only opens long positions, the idea is to open less positions during periods of strength and more positions during periods of weakness. It's never as simple as it sounds. For more radical tweaks or outright departures from the main trading robot I'll strike out with a small amount of capital in a new account. I have one of these experimental robots running right now. It's very heavily tweaked.I've got another radical, but simple, idea in the wings. It will have to wait until next weekend so that I'll have time to implement it.

Robot Trading Six Weeks

Things are going well. As you can see BREAD (Basic Robot Earning All Day) is starting to look like a winner. Later tweaks reduced this aggressiveness to some degree but also lead to lower earnings. At the moment aggression is scaled based on market factors so that in some situations it will take a larger slice.Although the last week of earnings was great it's really too early to know how this robot will perform in the long term. As mentioned in a recent post I know that BREAD will earn the most during a consolidation period with prices confined in a range that ends in an upward break. I do expect the AUDJPY to exhibit this behavior a lot but it certainly won't do this all the time. Now what? This thing has been trading live for a while now. The only thing I plan to do is keep on letting it run until I'm able to create something better. ARTFAB (A Rising Tide Floats All Boats) is the latest attempt...UPDATE: Something I'm curious about is if I'll notice a longer term cycle in robot behavior. For example, the last time BREAD earned more than 10% in a week there were a couple of weeks that then underperformed. It is possible that the market will exhibit behavior that is clearly visible through trading profits.UPDATE: I have discovered this very good blog... Hack the market. This suggest to me that I can gauge my daily returns against that of the bigger players to see whether not I'm doing well. Notice that the smallest group seems to have much better returns -- and thus is where I should be comparing my results. Perhaps my stretch goal of 2.5% is a little two low? Regardless..............................................

Minor BREAD Adjustments

The BREAD trading robot has had a minor tweak during this last weekend. To make a long story short, another risk modification metric has been defined. If things work as planned this will give the robot the ability to trade over a wider currency pair price move. Obviously, the plan is to simultaneously maintain the same level of profitability. My initial readings on quantitative analysis, via forums, seem to indicate another insular pool of thinking. Unfortunately, it seems that ego often persuades people that their own area of expertise is the right area while other areas have nothing to offer.Advice to any that will take it...Find the important or valuable information without consideration of the source. Often, combining a few great insights from various fields (validly) will provide greater value than being very proficient at all the skills of a particular field. The real world often is not as simple as the assumptions made in order to perform calculations at the edge of the envelope.

Challenging Times !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While I realize the world went through a bit of an unwind, before and after the Dubai incident, I've been busy with work and family issues instead.Things have just been incredibly busy!In any case, what with the volatility and unwinding that has been going on it's probably a good time to be inactive. I did manage to blow up my small discretionary account (my robots are far better traders than I am) but that's insignificant. However, the big news, from my own point of view, is that I have some tweaks for my up-and-coming robot. Basically, I need it to detect a downward slide quickly and then decide not to waste it's risk capital on redundant positions.

The new global balance – Part II: Higher rates rather than weaker dollar in 2010

Many expect the dollar to continue to depreciate over the foreseeable future. This column suggests that it may strengthen in 2010 if the Federal Reserve exits quantitative easing sooner than its counterparts and the US economy enjoys a strong rebound.

Many expect the dollar to continue to depreciate over the foreseeable future. This column suggests that it may strengthen in 2010 if the Federal Reserve exits quantitative easing sooner than its counterparts and the US economy enjoys a strong rebound.
In the early months of the crisis at the end of 2008, the US dollar rose sharply as US interest rates fell sharply (IMF 2009). In a previous column, we argued that the puzzling response of the dollar and US rates during the panic of the fourth quarter of 2008 – stronger dollar and lower rates – would be temporary and that the return of risk appetite and structural aspects of the new global balance – smaller gross capital flows and the savings drain resulting from global fiscal policies – would steepen rates and weaken the dollar. Since the end of March, ten-year US Treasury yields have increased 76bp (to 3.4%)

How will the value of the dollar and long-term interest rates respond in 2010? It seems likely that both US monetary and fiscal policy will join forces to push long-term rates higher when quantitative easing ends. The end of quantitative easing in 2010 and the start of the tightening cycle in the US – both supportive forces for the dollar – should also compensate dollar-negative fiscal considerations. Thus, contrary to the popular view of a continuously weaker dollar, the phasing out of quantitative easing implies that the dollar may strengthen in 2010 relative to other currencies.
Exiting quantitative easing in 2010: Dollar positive, rates negative
A priori, one would have expected the bold US fiscal stimulus to have already shown its teeth by now; after all, the US fiscal deficit will be close to -12% of GDP in 2009. So isn’t the mild steepening of US rates (roughly 80bp for ten-year Treasuries since March) disappointing? We believe that the stimulus has barely affected the market yet, courtesy of the unrelenting efforts of the Fed to purchase long-term risk-free assets. The supply of fixed-income issuance in the US has more than doubled in 2009 relative to the average of recent years (Figure 3), but the net issuance net of the Fed’s purchases – that is, the supply of assets that effectively hits the private market – is expected to be only $845 billion in 2009, around 30% smaller than in normal times. We can safely say that the effect of the fiscal expansion on US bond markets has been dramatically offset by the Fed’s quantitative easing.

But the supply net of Fed purchases is expected to rise considerably in 2010, both as quantitative easing purchases taper off and the supply of US Treasuries ramps up (an increase to $2.1trillion seems likely, almost twice as large as a normal year). Moreover, short-term US rates are also likely to increase in 2010 if expectations about the US economy continue to be revised upward. Thus, even if demand for riskless assets remains temporarily high in 2010 (due to a steep yield curve and large demand for riskless assets by capital-scarce banks), these suggest strong upward pressures for US long-term rates.
Quantitative easing purchases also have had crucial implications for currencies. As we highlighted in March, quantitative easing is a policy that favours “rates over currencies” in the sense that the central banker chooses to keep rates low at the expense of a weaker currency. In a recent report, we document how the directional implication of global quantitative easing are consistent with the departures from the so-called recovery trade observed over the summer months. In particular, they are consistent with the rally in equities without an increase in long-term yields, the fact that the effective dollar index continued its decline (consistent with the strong quantitative easing in the US relative to the rest of the world), the yen appreciated vis-à-vis the dollar (consistent with the relative tightening in Japan), and sterling weakened against the euro and yen (consistent with the relatively stronger quantitative easing in the UK).
As a result, the timing of the remaining asset purchases is critical for the evolution of rates and currencies in coming quarters. Asset purchases of around 3% of US GDP remain in the pipelines (Figure 4). The Fed has said that, without changing the total amount of its agency mortgage-backed securities and agency debt purchases, it would “gradually slow the pace of these purchases in order to promote a smooth transition in markets and anticipates that they will be executed by the end of the first quarter of 2010.” Whether the Fed’s quantitative easing will slow down enough in the coming months to imply higher rates is uncertain. It will likely continue to put downward pressures on the dollar temporarily, but the pressure for lower rates is bound to be smaller. The increase in supply and the continuation of the unwinding of risk aversion should be enough to get long-term yields rising again by the end of 2009.

This implies an interesting scenario for 2010 where quantitative easing in the US is set to end. The implications for long-term rates are clear – they can only move up. But contrary to the popular view of a continuously weaker dollar, the phasing out of quantitative easing implies that the dollar may strengthen in 2010 relative to other currencies, especially if the Fed swings into tightening mode faster than Europe and Japan.
The misleading undoing of global imbalances
Some commentators would add the sharp improvement in the US current account deficit to the set of supportive factors to the dollar in 2010. Figure 5 shows that the US current account deficit fell from 6.5% of GDP in 2006 to about 3% of GDP in the second quarter of 2009, reducing the net supply of dollar assets to the world by more than half. But the narrowing of the US current account deficit may not be as benign for the dollar as most believe, as it partly reflects temporary considerations that mask the effects of US fiscal policy on the dollar.

First, the reduction of global trade balances is partly the result of the cyclical collapse in global trade. A proportional contraction of imports and exports has the effect of moving deficits and surplus closer to equilibrium. As soon as global trade picks up, the process is likely to be at least partially reversed. Thus, the decline in the US current account deficit has temporary components that may have initially led to an overcorrection. Second, as Figure 5 shows, the improvement in the current account was the result of the sharp fall in investment, as the increase in personal savings has been more than offset by the public dis-saving (the “savings drain” discussed in our previous column). If a strong US rebound materialises, this could imply that investment finally starts increasing after a long period of contraction and, as risk aversion simultaneously fades away, a growing US current account deficit may face tougher financing terms through 2010. In terms of the value of the dollar, this is likely to have a negative impact, partly compensating the supportive role of the relative tightening of US monetary policy.
The dollar path relative to emerging market currencies may face old challenges. The post-crisis version of the so-called Bretton Woods II – the desire of some emerging markets’ central banks to prevent sharp currency fluctuations through leaning-against-the-wind intervention – is likely to imply that the countries with less central bank resistance will likely have their currencies strengthen the most relative to the dollar in the next year.1 Thus, while currencies in emerging Asia and Latin America appear the natural candidates to appreciate vis-à-vis the dollar, the undoing of global imbalances may also fall disproportionately on more flexible G10 commodity currencies such as the Australian and New Zealand dollars (and even on the euro), a pattern that has become more visible in recent weeks.

In short, in contrast with growing dollar scepticism and even though US external accounts continue to point to dollar weakness despite the recent correction, the fast rebound of the US economy and the undoing of the monetary stimulus may deliver higher rates in lieu of a weaker dollar in 2010.

1 See Kiguel and Levy-Yeyati (2009). If the crisis taught anything to central bankers, it was the convenience of liquid foreign currency reserves in times of trouble. In a recent paper, Obstfeld et al. (2008) make a strong case for the prudential motive for reserve accumulation.

Tides may turn in the forex market into 2010

The final weeks of 2009 have brought a sense that tides may be turning in the foreign exchange market reflecting broader developments in the global economy. The predominant changes relate to the dollar.
December’s 5 percent recovery in the USD index is linked to an improved outlook for the U.S. economy.
There are risks to this optimism, but short dated U.S. yields have pushed higher since late November allowing the dollar to shrug off the downtrend that characterised it during 2009 and potentially embark upon a cyclical recovery; at least against some currencies.
Better U.S. economic data in early December couldn’t have come soon enough for the Japanese authorities. In late November USD/JPY had fallen to a 14-year low.
Having proclaimed the economy to be in deflation the Japanese government openly pressured the Bank of Japan to take further supportive policy measures.
The Bank announced an emergency credit facility and subsequently stated it will not tolerate a negative inflation rate. This, combined with a rise in short dated U.S. yields, has allowed the JPY to take back the mantle of favoured funding currency from the dollar. The downtrend in USD/JPY that has been in place since mid 2007 may be turning.
In view of weak domestic growth prospects, there is a lot of political will in Japan and the Eurozone in favour of a stronger dollar.
During 2009 EUR/USD was driven almost exclusively by the pros and cons (mostly cons) of the USD; Eurozone fundamentals were decidedly in the back seat. Over the last couple of weeks, there has been an increase in the negative press surrounding the fiscal difficulties of some EMU members which has pressured the EUR.
No doubt there is more bad news on budgets waiting in the eurozone’s wings which could come from Greece, Ireland, Spain or Portugal.
Austria, the Baltics and Iceland may also have a few nasty surprises up their sleeves. While there appears to be no real risk of the European Economic and Monetary Union breaking down, there could be sufficient bad news to highlight the inadequacies of EMU’s budget criteria and bring a rocky ride for the euro.
December’s 2.9 percent drop in cable is more moderate than the 4.8 percent decline in EUR/USD. The EUR’s underperformance reflects its sovereign deficit problems. That said the outlook for the UK remains mired by its own weighty problems.
While decent labour data have brought the first really good UK news since the start of the recession, the issues surrounding the budget deficit, slow growth and forthcoming general election are likely to weigh on sterling at least into the spring; with the EUR under pressure, cable is likely to reflect most of this weakness.
It is feasible that the USD could maintain a better tone vs the EUR, the JPY and GBP while still underperforming higher yielding currencies.
AUD/USD has moved off its recent highs on fears that having tightened policy three times the RBA may leave rates steady for an extended period.
Given Australia’s proximately to the fast growing Asian region, in all likelihood the RBA will be hiking again before the Fed is even off the starting blocks. AUD/USD may see parity in 2010.
While the dollar’s downtrend may persist against some currencies, dollar appreciation vs the yen and the euro would likely be sufficient to keep the USD index trending higher.
This would relieve immediate pressure on China to revalue its effective USD peg. That said once China is confident that external demand has strengthened a revaluation of the CNY will become more likely, meaning a move is possible in H2 2010.

Risk and Reward Forex Calculator

The risk and reward calculator will help you to calculate the position's best targets and their respective reward-to-risk ratios based on the Fibonacci retracements from the local peak and bottom. It's a powerful tool to determine the potential risks before entering any positions.
The price needs to be inside the wave for you to use this calculator properly. Here are the two variants of the wave you can work with — bullish and bearish:
The current price is C; A is the beginning of the wave (bottom for bullish and peak for bearish); B is the local maximum (for bullish wave) or minimum (for bearish wave).
Fibonacci retracements (0.382 and 0.618) are calculated to form the entry, target and stop-loss levels. It's better to enter positions only if the current price (C) is close to 0.382 Fibonacci level.

Advantages of the Forex Market

When thinking about various investments, there is one investment vehicle that comes to mind. The Forex or Foreign Currency Market has many advantages over other types of investments. The Forex market is open 24 hrs a day, unlike the regular stock markets. Most investments require a substantial amount of capital before you can take advantage of an investment opportunity. To trade Forex, you only need a small amount of capital. Anyone can enter the market with as little as $300 USD to trade a "mini account", which allows you to trade lots of 10,000 units. One lot of 10,000 units of currency is equal to 1 contract. Each "pip" or move up or down in the currency pair is worth a $1 gain or loss, depending on which side of the market you are on. A standard account gives you control over 100,000 units of currency and a pip is worth $10.
The Forex market is also very liquid. When trading Forex you have full control of your capital.
Many other types of investments require holding your money up for long periods of time. This is a disadvantage because if you need to use the capital it can be difficult to access to it without taking a huge loss. Also, with a small amount of money, you can control
Forex traders can be profitable in bullish or bearish market conditions. Stock market traders need stock prices to rise in order to take a profit. Forex traders can make a profit during up trends and downtrends. Forex Trading can be risky, but with having the ability to have a good system to follow, good money management skills, and possessing self discipline, Forex trading can be a relatively low risk investment.
The Forex market can be traded anytime, anywhere. As long as you have access to a computer, you have the ability to trade the Forex market. An important thing to remember is before jumping into trading currencies, is it wise to practice with "paper money", or "fake money." Most brokers have demo accounts where you can download their trading station and practice real time with fake money.

$ Up 3rd Day on Lower Consumer and Manufacturer Sentiment

EUR/USD went down for a third day in a row today after the fundamental reports from U.S. showed decline of the confidence in both consumer and manufacturer sectors of the economy. Only housing price index showed a moderate monthly growth today. EUR/USD is currently trading near 1.4810.
S&P/Case-Shiller home price index based on the seasonally-adjusted prices decreased by 11.36% in August compared to the same month of 2008. It rose from 143.12 to 144.51 in month-to-month perspective.
Consumer confidence decreased from 53.4 to 47.7 in October. A small growth to 53.5 was expected by the market participants. Index reading below 50 is critical and suggests worsening of the conditions for the consumer sector.
Richmond Fed manufacturing index decreased from 11 to 7 in October. It was expected to be reported at the same level as previous month.

EUR/USD Shows Record Weekly Fall !

The dollar is rising against the euro today, almost snapping the yesterday gain on EUR/USD, as the personal income and spending statistics worsened in September. The macroeconomic reports that were released today sent the stock markets down after a yesterday rally and the euro continued it’s weekly slump, showing a biggest 5-day drop since April this year. EUR/USD is trading at 1.4746 now.
U.S. personal income remained unchanged in September after rising by 0.1% in August. The market participants expected such value from the report. Personal spending declined by 0.5% in September, following 1.4% growth during a previous month. This value was also expected by the analysts.
Chicago PMI index rose unexpectedly fast in October — from 46.1 to 54.2. The forecasts pointed at 49.0 as a new value for this manufacturing indicator.
University of Michigan Index of Consumer Sentiment decreased from 73.5 to 70.6 in October, while a decline to 70.0 was forecasted by the analysts.

Do you have what it takes to become a successful Forex Trader?

Sunday, October 4, 2009

Forex trading, or any trading for that matter, is an occupation that requires experience and the accumulation of proficiency not unlike any other highly skilled profession. Whether you are a leading executive at a major publically traded company, a professional golfer or trading from your kitchen table, there are 5 key ingredients that one must possess in order to become successful.1. You must be Passionate about what you do.As Forex traders we all face one unique set of circumstances that does not exist in any other profession. We get rewarded for when we succeed and equally punished when we don’t! Could you image a corporate worker one quarter receiving a significant accomplishment bonus and the next quarter actually getting money taken from their paycheck for missing performance targets? Not on your life!
We do as Forex traders and that is why passion for what you do will carry you through the tough times that are part of your trading business. Asked yourself why you trade currencies and would you still do it if Forex were not potentially lucrative? Your answers will be quite revealing. You’ve got to feel your passion for trading!2. You have to Apply Yourself and work hard at it.I talk to so many people that enter into Forex trading with the aspiration of getting rich quick. Without putting the time and energy into really getting good at trading I see them jump from strategy to strategy looking for the goose that will lay the golden egg and eventually quitting while blaming everything else, except the true cause.I got news for you – you are the goose and your Forex education is the golden egg. The magic has always resided with the magician and not some strategy. Work hard at trading and the rewards will eventually come your way. Remember what Tiger Woods said, “Funny, the harder I work the luckier I get.” Apply yourself as a trader and it will be no accident when your account begins to blossom.

3. You must Focus to really get good at what you do.Now here is the hurdle most Forex traders struggle to get over. You have the passion and you are applying yourself to your trade, now focus and really get good at just at what you are doing. Be the expert to the experts at just that one thing. Become the master of a strategy or risk management methodologies. Really focus on getting good at it.Stop jumping around or getting pulled from the last “latest and greatest” into the next “latest and greatest” and focus on one aspect of Forex trading and know it inside out. Know it strengths and weakness. Set your sights on becoming expert on just one aspect of trading and watch it spill over in all other aspects for your currency trading. This is the time to fail forward fast, use every setback as a learning opportunity that will propel you 3-steps ahead!

4. You must Push Yourself beyond the point everyone else might have quite. In Forex Trading this is simple. Assume there is someone on the other side of your trade that is pushing themselves and sharpening their edge. To be successful you must you must do the same thing. Now is the time to examine your mental edge. Do you know the single most critical factor in any currency trade? It is you, the trader! Sharpening you mental edge is the most difficult aspect of trading, but also the most rewarding.Start with your Forex education and gain the self-awareness necessary to maximize your strengths and suppress your weaknesses. Any expert will tell you that trading is 80% mental. It’s time to sharpen your trading to the razor’s edge and you do this through Forex education. A constant and never ending process that will become the cornerstone of your Forex experience.

5. You must, without wavering, be Determined and Persist to your objective. You will fail. I can state that emphatically. However, you will not be defeated unless you allow your failures to control your trading. It is the old adage; failure is not falling of your horse, failure is refusing to get back on. Your success depends on your ability to dismiss the criticism, rejection, self-doubt and pressures associated with Forex trading.Defining what is a winning trade, losing trade and bad trade will go a long way into developing you as a successful trader. Without the determination and persistence in all aspects of your trading life, obstacle will definitely appear closer and larger than they actually are.Take a moment and assess yourself and your trading. Do you have the key elements to succeed? Which areas are presents development opportunities? When conducting a self-evaluation it is critical to be totally upfront and honest with yourself. After all, you will only be dishonest with yourself. One of the most interesting observations you can make is that all key success factors are interwoven. One factor supports the other. This is why your Forex education isa continuous journey of forex strategy, money management and self-mastery. Set these factors as your Forex education goals and take your currency trading to new heights.

USDCAD: TOO MUCH, TOO FAST IN FOREX

Last nite usdcad fall too much and too fast. Is is unexpected. As usual when a pair move too much and too fast, it will lose it balance. As a result, usdcad maybe entering swinging mode for a few days. It doesnt really has direction. It will just goes up and down waiting for it to balance out before a new trend continue.I am still holding usdcad short for now but in the long run it is not profitable. I will exit soon and wait for the equilibrium of the pair.

STOP LOSS THE MARKET IS CRUEL ?

Sometimes it happen but this is one rare ocassion and I am really stunned. I was holding a long position on GJ. I am in profit of about 100 pip with a stop loss of 50 pip from my entry point. Guess what. The market turned down 150 pip in one move, hit my stop loss and now its flying. This has nothing to do with the broker, it is just the market is cruel. No matter who, you will get hit sooner or later. In order to hit me, the market has to move 150 pip againts the trend. What an honour I must say. 150 pip is much more than most people TP.Enough said, all pairs should have a steady climb from now on. If you are holding long at the moment, make it long term.

CRAPPY CONNECTION!!!

Sorry for the long period of no update on this blog. It seems that internet connection is really bad. At the office I am using Streamyx. Connection is crappy as usual. At home I am using Celcom 3G. Its better but its slow. Maybe my home is not well covered by the 3G network. As for forex, EurUsd, GbpUsd, AudUsd, EurJpy and GbpJpy is heading up now but not to worry, there is still time. On the long term only EurUsd looks good for a long trade. I am currently holding long EurUsd @ 1.2640 with a stop loss of 50 pip. This is a long term trade, hopefully the move upwards will take a long time and lots of pips on the way. As for the other pairs, it is heading up but its not an uptrend yet. They will be entering the ranging period now. So there will be plenty of chances for entry. If all these pairs maintained their direction we will see a change in trend in the longer term trades.I will list key levels for guidelines. These key levels are good for both sell and buy position. Treat them as guidelines for entry in either direction. EurUsd : 1.2670GbpUsd : 1.5050AudUsd : 1.6450EurJpy : 119.20GbpJpy : 141.50These key levels are always changing. Since most of these pairs are entering the ranging zone so you can use these key level for this whole week. As for me I will be looking for a long trade from these levels that is if the current direction stays.Good things are simple things. If you have a system, make sure it is simple. With simple indication you can make clear decision

FOREX SIGNAL - NOT REALLY !!!!!

When people say free forex signal, it refer to an instruction to trade specific currency pair at a certain price. Normally this signal is based on the trader study and experience. It is more of a personal view of things to come.In certain cases the signal does work. In a different situation, it fails. This is because the person giving that signal is also a small trader. His study is based on either technical or fundamental with no real money to back it up. If that person is good, he will have enough followers and the total money traded towards his signal will back him up and make the currency move. If that person have very few followers, then he is swimming alone in a sea full of sharks. That is what most of us do. We do not coordinate and we work alone in forex. Thats why the sharks are taking their time and making easy picking of us, swallowing one at a time. It doesnt sounds good but its the truth. Now you dont have to wonder why most people fails and why banks keep on making huge profit. If you want to take forex signal, take it from someone who you can trust from inside the banks. They have a lot more info and study on forex. The amount of info, knowlegde, manpower and money is impossible for any of us to compete. For some people who manage to find a method to be profitable in forex, its a good thing. You have found a way to take advantage of the system. The system after all is developed by human and human by itself is full of weaknesses. For those of you who is losing, its time to think about swimming alone is a sea of sharks. Time to find friends and help each other out in terms of knowledge and money power. Dont get me wrong, I am in profit today. I have found a way to take advantage of the system though its like a mouse, stealing food one little bit at a time. Better to profit a little than losing all the time but for how long are you willing to be the small fish. Always jumping in and out of trade. Hoping for the trend to hold long enough for you to gain a little profit. In order for me to grow in forex, I need to team up. It has long been in my mind, just looking for the right opportunity and people. Anyone here think the same? ???

A DIFFICULT MARKET CONDITION IN FOREX !

It is not looking particularly well for GBPUSD. In the other hand, EURUSD and AUDUSD is looking good for a long term trade. I am taking the long position. It may take a very long time to profit but looking at the chart from a technical view, EURUSD and AUDUSD is in a good position for a long term trading.I dont exactly know the entry point but I do know the direction. It is time to monitor the shorter time frame in order to find the best possible entry and to minimize stop loss. It may take sometime but I dont care. I have been waiting for this moment almost 2 months. Look at the charts and see the formation of daily, 4 hour, 30 minute and 5 minute. You may see something that took me over 2 years to see. Only time can tell if my calculation is correct. At the moment I am still waiting for the 5 minute chart to give and entry signal

TRADING WITH MOVING AVERAGE %

At the moment I am rather busy. Moving to a new place and house. The house still needs a lot of work. As a result, I do not have time to update this blog. Trading is still going on but on a shorter timeframe. Result is consistent now. AudUsd is very kind at the moment with no sudden movement. In the next few weeks I will show you how to trade using only MA. As usual what works for me may not work for you. This is because some of you may not be able to follow the rules of the game.RULES OF THE GAME1. Trade based on your capital and the time that you have. The bigger your capital the longer the TF. The more time you have the longer the TF. Vice versa.2. Only trade at the direction pointed by the MA pairs. If the MA pairs is showing mixed direction, do not trade. The MA pairs must be pointing at the same direction.3. If a trade suddenly change direction, do not hesitate to close it at a loss and turn the trade. This is the hardest part where most of you failed. Free your mind or become a loser all your life.4. Keep in mind, there is no such thing as winning all the time. Just make sure you win a lot more than you lose. In the end your profit will grow along with your confident.Simple system with simple rules. I like to keep it simple. No point of having the most complex system when simple system can have the same result. With this system you will be out of the market most of the time. This is because you will only be taking the big move and avoiding the small move and market noise. Last advise. Do not anticipate. Forex is not a game of inteligence eventhough this system at full swing will show you possible turning point. I am having a possible turning point for audusd at 0.7200 but I will not take it coz there will be market swing before the actual turn. Why wast time waiting for the big move when you can actually see when its going to move.In the mean time, good luck for all of you. I will be back once my pc is online again. At the moment I am posting this on a laptop. I dont like laptop, too small keypad, makes it hard to do speed typing.

BIG PLAYERS SEE ONLY BIG NUMBERS

I am typing this from my pc. It a bit of a mess now, the new house still needs a little work and I am not feeling well lately. Maybe its the change in climate. This week I am going to talk about numbers only. Forex is after all based on numbers. Example, I have a long position on GBPUSD @ 1.4700 with a profit of 320 pips at the moment and still holding. What I am going to say is big players only see big number. The do not see the last 2 digit. The last 2 digit is for scalpers. Big players only see the 1st 3 or 4 digit only. So if a bank wants to buy or hedge a currency they will give an instruction to buy at 1.47. Thats it. Simple yet people fails to see it.So what happens at 1.47? The price will bounce of or hover around it but things arent always what they appear to be. What happen is price will have a range between 1.46 - 1.48. That is almost 200 pips wide range. Imagine what happen to your 50 or 100 pip SL?? Now you know why people lose money even though they have the right direction. These big players have big money they dont mind to stand few hundreds negative pips coz in the end they will profit big time. What they do is they will have a standing order to trade at certain level. Because the total amount of order, the market cannot fill the order in 1 transaction and so price will hover or bounce of a certain level. This is where double top or bottom appear. Behind it is the action of filling orders by these big players. Example EJ currently have a top of 1.34 and a bottom of 1.30. Big players are playing the game here. At the moment EJ is climbing and there is a big possibility that it will reach 1.34 again. I have a standing order to buy EJ at 1.30. If it hits there is a very big chance for 400 pips gain. Only time will tell.

Money Management Principles

One of the worst blunders that forex traders can make is attempting to trade without sufficient capital. The trader with limited capital not only will be a worried trader, always looking to minimize losses beyond the point of realistic trading, but he will also frequently be taken out of the trading game before he can realize any sense of success trading the method(s) or patterns.Exercise DisciplineDiscipline is probably one of the most overused words in forex trading education. However, despite the clich, discipline continues to be the most important behaviour one can master to become a profitable trader. Discipline is the ability to plan your work and work your plan. Its the ability to give your trade the time to develop without hastily taking yourself out of the market simply because you are uncomfortable with risk. Discipline is also the ability to continue to trade the methods and patterns even after youve suffered losses. Do your best to cultivate the degree of discipline required to be a world-class trader.Employ Risk-to-Reward RatiosThe following shows you possible risk-to reward ratios, and the win ratios required to break even in a trading system.Risk-to-Reward Ratio (in pips)and Win Ratio Required to Break Even(%)40/20 (2 to 1) = 67%, 40/40 (1 to1) = 50%, 40/60 (1 to 1.5) = 40%,40/80 (1 to 2) = 33.5%,60/20 (3 to 1) = 75%,60/60 (1 to 1) = 50%,60 /90 (1 to 1.5) = 40%,60/120 (1 to 2) = 33.5%Important NoteNever risk more pips on a trade then you plan to make. It doesnt make sense to risk 100 pips in order to make only 10. Why? See below example.Profit taking level (pips): 10Stop used or pips at risk: 100You win 10 times which makes 100 winning pips. You ONLY lose once and have to give back all profits!!!This type of trading makes no sense and you will lose on the long term guaranteed!

japan Gold Market

Japan has evolved as a major market for gold for fabrication and investment since trading was liberalised in 1974. But the gold business in Japan has much earlier origins. Gold mines in Japan in the 17th century exported through the Dutch East India Company to East Asian countries. Tokuriki Honten, still an important refiner and fabricator, traces its history back to 1727. Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo, the leading precious metal refiner and trader, was established in 1885.
Actual mine production is limited. The only significant mine is Sumitomo Metal Mining's Hishikari on Kyushu island, opened in 1985, with output between seven and eight tonnes (0.25-0.26 million oz) annually. The Japanese market is supplied, therefore, both by imports of bullion and by-product gold from imported concentrates.Total gold demand in Japan ranges between 200 and 275 tonnes (6.4 – 8.8 million oz), embracing jewellery fabrication, electronic and industrial uses, dental applications and physical bar investment . Japan is the world's foremost user in electronics, using over 100 tonnes (3.21 million oz) in 2000 according to GFMS (although this fell sharply, to around 70 tonnes or 2.25 million oz, in 2001 on the back of the slowdown in global demand). Japan's use of dental gold in 2001 was around 21 tonnes (675,000 oz) according to GFMS. Physical bar hoarding is also much higher than in other industrial countries, and is an anonymous way of holding wealth outside of the banking sector. GFMS estimate that it averaged just under 60 tonnes (1.9 million oz) over the past decade and exceeding 100 tonnes (13.2 million oz) in 1999. The first few months of 2002 saw a surge in Japanese hoarding demand due to fears about the health of the banking system. It is also the custom in Japan for companies to give gifts of 24 carat ornaments such as teapots, saki cups, vases and chopsticks. The gold tea ceremony room at the Moa Art Museum in Shizuoka Province used 50 kilos (1,607 oz) for teapots and cups, plus gold leaf for its walls.

Online Currency Trading requires Patience

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. This adage often brings back the memories of my past days when I was trading initially in the currency exchange market. Indeed, there's nothing more hurtful than losing your invested money in the FX market. But, online currency trading is like life where you're got to learn from your wrong moves and keep moving on. Learning the basic skills of online forex trading could be easy but, practically, one needs to acquire the advanced skills to play safe through thick and thin of FX trading.I have traded in forex for many years and, if you count on me, I must tell you that the secret of successful trading lies largely on the hunch and intuition of an trader. Technically expressed, you should have the accurate forex alerts and forex signals to be able to make the right moves in the currency market. However, this is easier said than done as the skills of the Currency Trading Signal takes a long time to master. This is why while a few people are able to boost their forex pips in a short span of time, the others take a long time to achieve the same or maybe, some of them get frustrated and just give it up! The reality is that not many people are ready to be entirely devoted to the perilous process of online forex trading.Having said this, I still wonder why some people choose to be a dare-devil and risk their money instead of simply following an established and renowned Account Forex Online Trading. I began trading in 1997 and there is one important thing I have learnt in my trading career so far, i.e., you have to got to be patient to learn the tricks of making right moves at the right times and profit from your trading.Since I have led quite a successful career in forex trading, I have been sharing the tips and tricks of online currency trading with many traders around the world through my G7 Forex Trading System which as you know has remained pretty successful for many traders so far. My G7 Forex Trading System is an easy-to-follow, step-by-step trading manual offering in-depth online forex trading review. If you visit my site (www.forex-science.com) you will find many of my existing customers are pretty satisfied with the performance of their investments and in fact, most of them have been able to increase their forex pips drastically. You would be surprised to know quite a few of them haven't traded for a long time! Now, this is what we call success in the forex trading, eh?

Retail forex

In financial markets, the retail forex (retail off-exchange currency trading or retail FX) market is a subset of the larger foreign exchange market. This "market has long been plagued by swindlers preying on the gullible," according to The New York Times[1]. Whilst there may be a number of fully regulated, reputable international companies that provide a highly transparent and honest service, it's commonly thought that about 90% of all retail FX traders lose money. [2] [3]
It is now possible to trade cash FX, or forex (short for Foreign Exchange (FX)) or currencies around the clock with hundreds of foreign exchange brokers through trading platforms. The reason that the business is so profitable is because in many cases brokers are taking the opposite side of the trade, and therefore turning client capital directly into broker profit as the average account loses money. Some brokers provide a matching service, charging a commission instead of taking the opposite site of the trade and "netting the spread", as it is referred to within the forex "industry."
Recently forex brokers have become increasingly regulated. Minimum capital requirements of US$20m now apply in the US, as well as stringent requirements now in Germany and the United Kingdom. Switzlerand now requires forex brokers to become a bank before conducting fx brokerage business from Switzerland.[citation needed]
Algorythmic or machine based formula trading has become increasingly popular in the FX market, with a number of popular packages allowing the customer to program his own studies.
The most traded of the "major" currencies is the pair known as the EUR/USD, due to its size, median volatility and relatively low "spread", referring to the difference between the bid and the ask price. This is usually measured in "pips", normally 1/100 of a full point.[citation needed]
According to the October 2008 issue of e-Forex Magazine, the retail FX market is seeing continued explosive growth despite, and perhaps because of, losses in other markets like global equities in
